Skies Above the Reich

"Skies Above the Reich" is a gripping solitaire war game that thrusts players into the desperate air battles over Germany during World War II. You command a squadron of Luftwaffe Bf109 fighters, tasked with halting the relentless daylight bombing raids of the U.S. Army Air Force. Each mission pits your squadron against the formidable B-17 Flying Fortress formations, forcing you to make tough decisions about when and how to strike, all while managing limited resources and the survival of your pilots. The game spans the critical years of 1942 to 1945, with each mission forming part of a broader campaign. Missions are fast-paced, taking about 30 minutes each, but campaigns can stretch from six to 60 missions, following the trajectory of the escalating air war.

The gameplay is rich with strategic choices, from selecting pilots and aircraft attachments to determining attack tactics and managing your squadron over the course of multiple missions. As the campaign progresses, bomber formations become more lethal and fighter escorts more formidable, making each season of the war increasingly challenging. The advanced game adds an additional layer of depth by introducing “pursuit,” where fighters can chase down bombers after they’ve been knocked out of formation. The game can also be played cooperatively with another player, allowing two squadrons to tackle the bombers together, though only one player will emerge as the victor.
