Holland '44: Operation Market-Garden, September 1944 is a two-player wargame that recreates one of World War II’s most ambitious Allied offensives. Operation Market-Garden saw airborne and ground forces attempt to secure key bridges in the Netherlands, aiming to create a rapid path into Germany. This historically rich game puts players in command of either the determined Allied forces or the defensive German army, balancing bold advances with strategic countermeasures.
The game begins on September 17, 1944, with airborne troops landing behind enemy lines. Over the course of 20 turns, the Allied player must push forward aggressively, linking up ground forces with paratroopers while managing traffic congestion and river crossings. The German player, in contrast, must use counterattacks and defensive positions to stall the Allied advance. A shorter 10-turn scenario allows for a quicker playthrough of the campaign’s most pivotal moments.
With a scale of 2 kilometers per hex, Holland '44 covers the battlefield from the Belgian border to Arnhem, including critical areas where British forces engaged on the right flank. Battalions form the core of each army, with some company-sized units adding depth to strategic planning. Using a system similar to Ardennes '44, the game introduces mechanics such as ZOC Bonds, Determined Defense, and Traffic Markers, while placing special emphasis on bridge building and river crossings.
